Shane Keup And Nick Gonsalves Make Winthrop Debut In Loss At Clemson

Clemson, S.C. – Winthrop fell at Clemson in their only meeting with the Tigers this season by a final score of 13-3 Tuesday night. With the loss, Winthrop drops to 8-11 overall heading into their second Big South series of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first on a two-run RBI single by Will Taylor.
  • In the next inning Blake Wright singled to make the score 3-0.  
  • Harrison Wilson doubled down the left field line to bring in Jaylen Hernandez, getting the Eagles on the board in the fourth inning.
  • Three plays later Anthony Ruocco singled to left field, getting Wilson home and cutting the margin to one.
  • Clemson answered with four runs in their half of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.
  • The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth inning but Will Dorrell stuck out to end the frame.
  • The Tigers loaded the bases with no out in the bottom of the inning and proceeded to tack on six more runs to their total, making the score 13-2.
  • In the sixth, Ruocco got to third with two outs but Chancellor Jennings struck out to end the inning.
  • Kolby McWilliams flew out to center field to bring home Ricky Teel to end the night in the top of the ninth.

Winthrop continues Big South play at Gardner-Webb this weekend. First pitch of the first game of the series will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 22 with the series being broadcasted on ESPN+.
