Eagles Hit Four Doubles, Take Season Series From Longwood

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop won the series finale from Longwood by a final score of 9-5 Sunday afternoon, taking the season series from the Lancers and winning the first Big South series of the year. With the win, Winthrop moves to 8-10 overall and 2-1 in Big South play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winthrop threatened to score first in the opening frame but with two outs and Alan Benhardt on third, Will Dorrell grounded out to end the inning.
  • In the next inning, this time with Chancellor Jennings on third with two outs, Anthony Ruocco struck out to end the next Eagle opportunity to get the early lead.
  • But the deadlock would not last long as Winthrop exploded for five runs in the third, highlighted by three consecutive runs.
  • Two of the three consecutive runs were doubles by Jennings and Cole Griffith.
  • The Lancers cut the lead to two on a two-run RBI double by Tanner Thomas and an RBI single by James Nelson in top of the fourth.
  • Longwood then nearly cut the lead to one with two outs and a guy on third in the next two innings but failed to capitalize.
  • Winthrop went up six at 9-3 after a four-run sixth, highlighted by Jaylen Hernandez's two-run double.
  • The visitors made the score 9-5 after sac fly's by Hayden Harris and Campanelli in the top of the seventh.
  • Winthrop did load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning but Harrison Wilson popped out to end the threat.
  • Longwood did the same in the ninth although neither team ultimately scored for the rest of the way.

Winthrop heads to Clemson on Tuesday, Mar. 19 in their only meeting of the season with the Tigers. First pitch will be at 6 p.m. on ACCNX.
