Clinton, S.C.. – Winthrop softball earned a doubleheader split at Presbyterian College as it dropped the first game 5-2 before taking the nightcap 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles struck in the top of the third as Paige Rivas line a shot down the left field line with two outs
- The left fielder tried to make a diving catch but the ball bounced inside the line and into the corner as Rivas raced all the way around for an inside the park home run
- Winthrop tried to add more as Ashton VanHouse and Megan Powell followed with back-to-back singles but were stranded
- In the bottom of the fifth, PC threatened to tie the game
- It started with a two-out walk to Gracie DeCuir followed by a single to left from Kelby Goodrum
- Kaitlyn Tucker stepped in and drove a shot to left as Peyton Rivas fielded it and made a throw home to get the runner the plate to end the inning and preserve the lead
- In the top of the sixth the Eagles doubled their lead as Ansley Lee line a shot down the line just inside the bag at third base, scoring Grayson Buckner from second
- The Blue Hose pushed five runs across in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead
- It started with back-to-back walks to start the inning and then Maddi Wood sacrificed both runners into scoring position
- Mallory Fletcher hit a slow rolling single up the middle that just found its way into center field, scoring one run
- Kendall Owens singled to center just past a diving KaDedra Temple as two runs scored to push PC into the lead 3-2
- Goodrum provided a two-run single to make it 5-2 in favor of PC
Game 2
- Eagles grabbed an early lead for the second time on the day as Aspen King led off the inning with single to right center
- Reese Basinger followed with a single to center to put runners at the corners
- Basinger then stole second to put two runners in scoring position
- Paige Rivas grounded out to second base and on the play there was a mix up on the bases by Basinger and King
- King was briefly caught in a run down but then raced home, beating the throw and scoring for the 1-0 lead
- The next batter was VanHouse and she sent one to center field to score Basinger with a sacrifice fly
- In the bottom of the third, PC answered right away as it loaded the bases with no outs
- It started with back-to-back singles and then a walk to Kasey Wolfe
- Megan Powell did well to keep the damage minimal as she followed with a strikeout and pop up from the next two batters
- Owens hit a chopper toward third that just went over the head of Temple at third, finding its way into left field and scoring Goodrum from third
- Powell ended the threat as she got Emma Yanes to foul out to end the threat
- Eagles tried to answer right back in the top of the fourth as Smith singled with two outs and moved to third as Temple doubled down the right field line but King was unable to drive in a run
- In the top of the sixth the Eagles tried to add to their lead as Peyton Rivas had a two-out pinch-hit single and then stole second to get into scoring position
- Smith stood in and made good contact on a grounder to third but was thrown out to end the threat
- Blue Hose threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on second and two outs but Powell got Gracyn Hyatt swinging to end the inning
- PC did get a runner on first with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Powell ended the game with her 12th strikeout of the game
EXTRA BASES
- Mackenzie Smith had a base hit in each game of the doubleheader to stretch her hitting streak to six games
- Powell had a season-high 12 strikeouts and it was the 3rd appearance this year with eight or more
- Paige Rivas had two hits in the first game of the doubleheader and now has 129 career hits, tying for 30th on the program's all-time list
