Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Longwood

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop opened Big South play by splitting a doubleheader with Longwood by final scores of 9-4 and 10-6 on Saturday afternoon. Winthrop moves to 7-10 overall and 1-1 in conference action on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Lancers struck first in the second inning on Matt Stevenson's RBI groundout, scoring Noah Campanelli.
  • Longwood had a chance to extend their lead in the next inning but with a guy on third, Huge induced two straight strikeouts to end the frame.
  • Winthrop answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Anthony Ruocco and Alan Benhardt.
  • In the fourth, Harrison Wilson clobbered one to left field to up the lead to four.
  • Jaylen Hernandez put the Eagles ahead 6-1 after five innings of play on an RBI groundout, scoring Ruocco.
  • Abe Affholter singled to center field to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Longwood scored three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-4.
  • But Nicholas Badillo homered on the first pitch to right field of the Eagle half of the frame to lead by five.
  • This ended the scoring for the first game.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Hayden Harris came home to score while teammate Noah Campanelli stole second to start the second game.
  • Willie Havens homered to right center field to double the score for Longwood in the third.
  • With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth with two outs, the Eagles allowed two more runs to come in on a walk and a hit by pitch.
  • The visitors tacked on another run in the next inning on an error.
  • The Eagles began to battle back in the bottom of the sixth with the highlight of the frame being a two-run RBI double to left center field by Jaylen Hernandez.
  • Then two plays later with two outs, Harrison Wilson singled to left field, bringing in Hernandez and cutting the deficit to two.
  • James Nelson grounded out to bring in Campanelli to go up 6-3 in the seventh but Winthrop was not done.
  • The Eagles proceeded to load the bases in their half of the inning with no one out and tied the game on Nicholas Badillo's sac fly to center field, scoring Anthony Ruocco.
  • The game remained tied until the ninth inning when four runs won the second contest for the visiting Lancers.
 
MISCELLANEOUS
  • Riley Huge is the first Winthrop pitcher to record 10 or more strikeouts in four of the first five starts to a season since Heath Rollins had four in his first five starts in 2006.

Winthrop hosts Longwood tomorrow in the final game of the series. First pitch will be at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
