Lacrosse Ends Non-Conference Play At Cal-Davis Tuesday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop women's lacrosse program (0-6) concludes non-conference play with their second straight game in the state of California, taking on the Aggies of Cal-Davis on Tuesday afternoon, seeking their first win on the season.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CAL-DAVIS
This is the first meeting between the Eagles and the Aggies. Cal-Davis is currently 6-2 with victories over Akron, San Diego State, Lindenwood, St. Bonaventure, Davidson, and Butler. The contest with Butler was their most recent, an 11-8 decision at home this past Saturday.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
  • Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
  • Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
  • The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
  • Winthrop is 100-100 all-time as a program, the second most wins in overall Big South women's lacrosse history.
  • Winthrop leads the Big South in shot percentage with .431 and woman-up goals per game with 2.00.
  • Lexi Johnson and Dutton both lead the Eagles in goals with 11.
  • Cifarelli leads the Eagles in assists with five.
  • Katie Witmer leads the Eagles in shots on goal with 19.
  • Madison Mayer leads the Eagles in draw controls with 22. She is also third in the conference in this category.
  • Johnson leads the Eagles in caused turnovers with six.
  • Emma Calhoun leads the Eagles in groundballs with 16, good for 4th in the conference.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop fell at California by a final score of 14-3 on Sunday afternoon.
  • Katie Witmer led the Eagles in shots with three.
  • Winthrop had 11 saves to Cal's eight.
  • Calhoun led the Eagles in ground balls with five.
  • Johnson and Mayer each had three draw controls.
