Softball Falls To Georgia Southern Sunday Afternoon

Statesboro, Ga. – Winthrop softball wrapped up play at the Hail Southern Classic on Sunday with a 5-1 loss to Georgia Southern.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles got back-to back singles with two outs in the top of the first by Grayson Buckner and Megan Powell but were left stranded
  • In the fourth inning Mackenzie Smith doubled to right with two outs but the Eagles were unable to drive her in
  • Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Faith Barth and Dejah Mills delivered back-to-back singles with one away
  • Powell got the second out as she struck out Janai Conklin looking
  • Sam Vinson lined a 1-2 pitch off the outstretched glove of Powell and into center field to plate Barth, but that was all Powell allowed as she got a fly out to end the threat
  • Georgia Southern added two more runs in the fifth on a Makayla Brantley two-run, two-out single
  • Trailing 5-0 in the top of the seventh, pinch-hitter Petyon Bryden singled to center followed by a single to right by Smith
  • Pinch-hitter Ansley Lee lined a 2-2 pitch off the pitcher and all the runners were safe to load the bases with no outs
  • Aspen King grounded to short to drive home pinch-runner Olivia Martin, but Peyton Rivas was out at second to put runners at the corners
  • Pinch-hitter Ashley Wood singled to third to load the bases
  • Pinch-hitter Kaylyn Little grounded into a double play to end the threat as Little almost beat the throw at first on a bang-bang play

EXTRA BASES
  • Eagles finished with eight hits in the game, the first four hits of the game coming with two outs
  • King's RBI in the seventh was the first of her collegiate career

Winthrop heads to Spartanburg, S.C. for a midweek clash at Wofford College on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 6 p.m.
