Winthrop 50, Charleston Southern 65
How it Happened
First Quarter | The score was tied at seven after four minutes of play. Half of the Eagle's scores came on two jumpers by
Ronaltha Marc. Winthrop failed to score a field goal for nearly five minutes while CSU scored three times, taking a 13-9 lead with two minutes left.
Elli Garnett's triple cut it to one at the 1:21 mark but two free throws by the Bucs gave them a 15-12 lead at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter | Marc immediately started the second with a driving layup and
Tiana Spann gave Winthrop their first lead with a layup of her own on the next play. Eight quick points by the Bucs put them back in front while also holding the Eagles scoreless for three minutes. After a Winthrop free throw with 5:46 remaining, a three-pointer by CSU a few seconds later gave them a nine-point edge.
Blessing Okoh then answered with a deep bomb on the next play, making the score 26-20 in favor of CSU with five minutes to go. But CSU would go back up nine at 30-21 at the 2:45 mark by scoring four of the next five points and eventually seized their largest lead of the half at 35-22 a minute later. CSU would go on to lead 37-24 at the break.
Third Quarter | The Eagles trailed 41-30 at the 7:33 mark of the frame, with
Marissa Gasaway scoring four of the six early Winthrop points in the first three minutes of the third quarter. With the score the same, the Eagles went on a 10-4 run over the course of six minutes, cutting the lead to five at 45-40 inside of two minutes. The score would remain the same for the rest of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter | The Bucs scored six of the first eight points of the fourth quarter to go up 51-42 at the 7:24 mark. From here on out, CSU would hold Winthrop to eight points while scoring 14 themselves and taking a 65-50 lead inside of a minute. This would be the final score.
