How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop scored nine straight points after trailing 2-0 a few seconds in. Jada Ryce accounted for five of Winthrop's early nine points with a layup on the fast break and a triple. The Eagles also held Longwood scoreless for nearly seven minutes after the visitors scored the opening basket. Winthrop would lead 13-6 after the first quarter.

Second Quarter | Ronaltha Marc drained a triple to put Winthrop up 10 at 16-6 at the 7:37 mark only for the Lancers to respond with a jumper on the next play. Two more Winthrop field goals extended the lead to 12 with nearly five minutes to go, forcing a Longwood timeout. The Eagles then scored another basket a minute after the timeout had ended but failed to score for the remainder of the half. The Winthrop defense was sensational in the frame, holding Longwood to three field goals and holding them scoreless for six minutes. Winthrop would lead 22-12 at the intermission.

Third Quarter | Longwood went on an 11-3 run to start the second half, cutting the lead to two at the 7:15 mark. Elli Garnett hit a three-pointer on the next play to give the Eagles a five-point edge. Longwood then scored six more points to put them out in front 29-28 with four minutes left. But four quick points put Winthrop back in the lead nearly a minute later. The visitors knotted it up again with a triple immediately thereafter but Marc's jumper broke the tie. After Longwood tied it on the next play, back-to-back scores by Nyah Stallings put Winthrop up five inside of a minute but a closing 6-0 run by the Lancers put them up 40-39 to start the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter | Two free throws by Marissa Gasaway gave Winthrop a 41-40 lead immediately to start the quarter. Longwood responded with a jumper two minutes later only for Gasaway to score while being fouled. Her ensuing free throw put Winthrop up 44-42 at the 6:48 mark. After a Lancer free throw, Gasaway hit two more field goals to extend the margin to five with less than five minutes left. Garnett then hit three big free throws to lead by eight at the 3:26 mark. Longwood scored four points to cut the margin in half with 51 seconds left but Ryce's layup on the fast break put Winthrop up six a few seconds later. Longwood scored seven of the final nine points to account for the final margin.
