How it Happened
First Quarter | Eagles turned in a strong effort defensively over the first 10 minutes, holding the Highlanders to six points on 3-of-14 shooting. Radford scored the first bucket of the game as Terissa Brice scored on a layup off a steal. It remained a one possession game until 36 remaining when
Marissa Gasaway hit a free throw for at 10-6 lead.
Second Quarter | A free throw by
Jada Ryce put the Eagles up 11-5 early in the quarter. A three-point play by Ellie Taylor to make it a on possession game again at the 8:24 mark.
Nyah Stallings drained a three to push the lead back to five and hit another for an eight point advantage at 17-9 at the 6:42 mark. Highlanders tied the game with 1:34 left until halftime after a three-point play from Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker. Eagles grabbed the lead again on a couple of occasions but a Joi Williams jumper as time expired to tie the game at 25-25.
Third Quarter | Eagles opened the second half with a
Blessing Okoh three-pointer for the wing to lead in the early going. Radford went on a 5-0 spurt to take a 30-28 lead after Williams knocked down a three. The two teams then went back-and-forth on the next several possessions. With the score knotted at 38 with nearly a minute left, Radford got two quick points to make the score 42-38 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter | With Radford ahead 46-42 nearly halfway through the fourth quarter, Winthrop went on a 7-2 run to seize a 49-48 lead with nearly two minutes left. The Eagles also held Radford scoreless for six minutes. But the visitors hit a free throw a minute later and the contest would eventually go to overtime.
Overtime | Down 51-49 more than a minute into the extra frame, Winthrop forged ahead to stay by scoring four quick points, taking a 53-51 lead at the 2:53 mark of overtime. Winthrop then hit one more free throw a few seconds later to account for the final margin of victory and stymied the visitors on the defensive end after that.
