Lacrosse To Take Field Vs. Queens At Home Wednesday Night After Long Break

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop women's lacrosse program (0-2) faces the Royals of Queens University at home on Wednesday night after a 10-day layoff. The contest is set to begin at 6 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS QUEENS
This is the 2nd meeting between Winthrop and Queens, with the Royals leading the series 1-0. The two teams met for the first time last season with Queens winning 17-6 on their home field in Charlotte on Mar. 10.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 4-12 (1-8 Big South) record in 2023. The Eagles welcome nine newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Leigh Olson and Nick Anagnostis. The Eagles also return 22 players, five of whom played in all 16 contests last season.
  • Seniors Ellie Dutton, Grayson McKenzie and Claire Witmer return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Dutton and McKenzie both led the Eagles in goals with 25 while Witmer found the back of the net on 21 occasions.
  • Sophomore Scarlet Cifarelli led the Eagles in assists last season with 16. Cifarelli also tacked on 16 goals on 25 shots on goal.
  • The Eagles were ranked eighth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their third season under head coach Kara Concheck. Concheck is Winthrop's third head coach in program history.
  • Winthrop is 100-96 all-time as a program, the second most wins in overall Big South women's lacrosse history.
  • Winthrop leads the Big South in shot percentage with .333.
  • Claire Witmer leads the Eagles in goals with two.
  • Witmer and Gabby Pierpont each lead the Eagles in shots on goal with three.
  • Dutton and Emma Calhoun each lead the Eagles in groundballs with three.
  • Katie Witmer and Grace Taylor each lead the Eagles in caused turnovers with two.
  • Madison Mayer and Lexi Johnson each lead the Eagles in draw controls with four.
 LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop lost their second contest of the young 2024 season with a 25-5 final score to the Duke Blue Devils on the road on Sunday, Feb. 18, falling to 0-2 on the season.
  • The score was 3-2 in favor of Duke in the first six minutes of the contest, with Johnson and Claire Witmer scoring the two early goals for the Eagles.
  • The Blue Devils scored the next seven goals.
  • Pierpont stopped the Duke run with a goal at the 1:10 mark of the first quarter.
  • Duke scored the first five goals of the second quarter.
  • Erin Whitaker scored with exactly five minutes left in the frame.
  • Duke put two more goals in the back of the net to make the score 17-4 at the half.
  • The Blue Devils scored eight times in the second half while Winthrop scored once.
  • Winthrop had six saves to Duke's three.
  • Claire Witmer scored two goals to lead the Eagles.
  • Pierpont and Johnson led the Eagles in shots with three.
