Eagles Fall To Saint Joseph's, Campbell On Friday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Buies Creek, N.C. – Winthrop softball's winning streak came to an end at five straight after a 7-2 loss to Saint Joseph's and 3-0 loss at Campbell, on Friday on the opening day of the Camel Stampede.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Saint Joseph's
  • In the top of the first inning, Saint Joseph's pushed two across for an early lead
  • Sierra Fretz had the big hit with a two-run double down the left field line
  • Eagles threatened in the bottom of the first as Paige Rivas drew a leadoff walk and then stole second
  • Emma Jackson eventually drew a walk to load the bases but Aspen King struck out to end the threat
  • Saint Joseph's got two more in the second and three more in the third inning
  • In the bottom of the fifth Bailey Warren hit a two-out pinch-hit double and was replaced on the bases by Ashton VanHouse
  • Megan Powell stepped in and singled to left, but VanHouse was thrown out at home trying to score on the play
  • Ansley Lee led off the sixth with a single but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double
  • Jackson followed with a single to short and moved over to second on a ground out
  • Peyton Rivas singled to third base to put runners at the corners but the threat ended on a ground out by Olivia Martin
  • Eagles spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs as Paige Rivas started it off with a single to third with one away
  • Paige Rivas then stole second and Emma Roberson walked to put two on
  • Two batters later Lee doubled to right center, scoring Paige Rivas and Roberson
vs. Campbell
  • Neither team had a hit through the first four innings
  • Campbell took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Charlie Montgomery reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second
  • Montgomery then advanced to third on a wild pitch and two batters later scored on a double down the left field line by Tristin Doster
  • With two outs and two on, Allyiah Swiney tripled to make it a 3-0 lead for Campbell

EXTRA BASES
  • Paige Rivas stole two bases on the day and moved into 5th on the program's all-time list with 52 in her Winthrop career
  • Ansley Lee had two RBI in the first game of the day her 4th multi-RBI game as an Eagle and now leads the team on the season with five
  • Lee extended her hitting streak to five games before it came to an end in the night game vs. Campbell
  • Emma Jackson also extended her hitting streak to five games vs. Saint Joseph's before it ended vs. Campbell

ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 as it will face Saint Joseph's at 10:30 a.m. and then face Incarnate Word at 1 p.m.
