Eagles Push Win Streak To Five After Wins Over Mount St. Mary's, Appalachian State

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop softball team completed play at the Winthrop Eagle Classic on Saturday, earning a 3-2 win over Mount St. Mary's and 4-1 over Appalachian State

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Mount St. Mary's
  • In the third inning Elizabeth King drew a lead off walk to get things going for the Mount
  • Avery Dinges followed with a bunt single and King raced around to third on the play
  • After Dinges stole second, Giana Del Giorno reached on a bunt single
  • The Eagles made a pitching change as Megan Powell came in
  • After a walk plated the first run, Zoe Truxon singled to center to score Dinges
  • Powell then settled in and retired the next three batters to end the top half of the third
  • Winthrop pulled within a run in the sixth inning when Ansley Lee belted a leadoff home run
  • Eagles went to the seventh trailing 2-1 as Paige Rivas singled with one out
  • Ashton VanHouse followed with a triple to right, scoring Rivas and tying the game
  • Powell stepped up and ripped a single through the left side to score VanHouse for the walk-off win
  • Powell also got the win in the circle as she tossed five innings of relief allowing just two hits
vs. Appalachian State
  • Both teams had runners in scoring position in the first inning, but came up empty
  • In the top of the fourth, the Mountaineers grabbed the lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Olivia Cook
  • Winthrop answered in the bottom half of the fourth as Lee reached on an error to lead things off
  • Emma Roberson came in to pinch-run for Lee and immediately stole second and then to third on a passed ball
  • Emma Jackson stepped to the plate and tied the game with a single to left
  • Two batters later, Peyton Rivas singled to left and then moved to second on a passed ball while Jackson came around to score
  • After moved to third on a wild pitch, Peyton Rivas scored on a sacrifice fly by KaDedra Temple for a 3-1 lead
  • Lee made it 4-1 in the fifth inning, scoring Paige Rivas who led off the inning with a single

EXTRA BASES
  • The Eagles won another 1-run game, the fourth 1-run game during their five-game winning streak
  • Lee and Jackson are on four-game hitting streaks while Paige Rivas and Ashton VanHouse have a hit in three straight games

Winthrop is back in action Saturday, Feb. 17 for day two of the Winthrop Eagle Classic and will take on Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. and Appalachian State at 5:30 p.m.
