Sprinters Lead Way For Eagles At Virginia Tech Challenge

Blacksburg, VA – A group of sprinters led the charge for Winthrop as they competed in their sixth and final regular-season meet of the 2023-24 indoor track and field season this weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge.

In The Field
  • Sophomore Johntavia Shaw led the field events with her 5th place finish in the shot put at 14.14m.
  • Sophomore Timothy Speaks was 6th in the weight throw with a toss of 16.40m.
On The Track
  • Freshman Michael Boucher led a 3-4-7 finish in the men's 60m dash with a time of 6.87 seconds. Closely behind was Toluwayan Agbeyomi and Kevin Brown in 6.88 and 6.98.
  • Freshman Raven Verner sprinted to 3rd place in the women's 60m dash in 7.82 seconds.
  • In the women's 200m dash, freshman Jade Reese was 6th in 26.27 seconds.
  • In the men's 200m dash, freshman Shane King was 8th in 22.07 seconds.
  • Senior Monay James was 6th in the 600m run in 1:45.94.
  • Sophomore Matthew Wright was 7th in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.75 seconds.
Coach Paxton Post-Meet Comments
"Always a good tuneup when we go to VA Tech," head coach Ben Paxton said. "We get to compete against conference foes as well as 3-4 ACC schools. Familiarity with the facility will help at next week's championship!"
 
Up Next
The Eagles return to Blacksburg, VA next weekend for the second straight and final time this season, competing in the Big South Indoor Championships.
