Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop softball opened day one of the Winthrop Eagle Classic with a 2-1 win over Binghamton and a 3-2 victory over Le Moyne, on Friday..

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Binghamton
- Bearcats took the early lead with a run in the first
- Leadoff batter Brianna Santos took a 2-2 pitch just over the fence in right center for a home run
- Eagles had a chance to tie in the bottom of the first as Ashton VanHouse stole second to move into scoring position but was stranded
- Winthrop almost tied the game in the fifth as Emma Jackson led off getting hit by a pitch
- Jackson moved to second on a ground out from Peyton Rivas
- Two batters later Reese Basinger singled up the middle and Jackson tried to score on the play but was called out on a close play at the plate
- In the bottom of the seventh, Ansley Lee led off with a single to right and was pinch-ran for by Emma Roberson
- Two batters later Emma Jackson singled to right and Roberson moved to second
- After KaDedra Temple walked, Basinger singled up the middle to plate Roberson and tie the game at 1-1
- In the top of the eighth and a runner placed on second the Eagles got out of it clean
- In the bottom of the eighth Paige Rivas was placed on second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from VanHouse and scored on Megan Powell's single to right
- Basinger earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game allowing one run on two hits with a walk and nine strikeouts
vs. Le Moyne
- Winthrop grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning
- Paige Rivas led off with a single and then stole second with one out
- Megan Powell followed with a single to right to put runners at the corners
- Ansley Lee was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then all three runners advanced on a wild pitch as Rivas came home for a 1-0 lead
- Mackenzie Smith entered the game in the circle in the 5th inning and kept the Le Moyne offense at bay allowing just one hit to earn the save
- Powell earned the win in the circle allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- The Eagles have now won three straight games, all three by one run
- Megan Powell has a three-game hitting streak and Ansley Lee has now reached base safely in four straight games
- Ashton VanHouse moved into 4th all-time in stolen bases while Paige Rivas moved up into a tie for 8th
ON DECK
Winthrop is back in action Saturday, Feb. 17 for day two of the Winthrop Eagle Classic and will take on Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. and Appalachian State at 5:30 p.m.
