Winthrop To Open 2024 Baseball Season With Rutgers Friday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. - Winthrop baseball's opening day is set for Friday, February 16 as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights come to the Winthrop Ballpark.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS RUTGERS
This is the first meeting between the Eagles and the Scarlet Knights.
 
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop enters 2024 predicted to finish fourth in the Big South Conference.
  • The Eagles finished the 2023 season with a 28-28 record (15-12 Big South) record, finishing third and advancing to the conference tournament at Truist Point in High Point, N.C.
  • Brody Hopkins and Josh Bookbinder were named First and Second Team All-Big South, respectively while Nicholas Badillo was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team.
  • Parker Whittle was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
  • Following the conclusion of the conference tournament, Will Martin was named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • The Seattle Mariners in the sixth round selected Hopkins in the MLB Draft. That was the first time since 2019 that a Winthrop baseball player was drafted.
  • Winthrop also earned the Team Academic Excellence Award from the ABCA for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Returning for his 14th year at the helm of the program is Tom Riginos.
  • Riginos's career record stands at 168-150 in conference games and 329-348 overall record, making him the fourth winningest coach in Big South history.
  • Riginos is just the third head coach in program history.
  • The program has an all-time record of 1,362-971-6 entering their 44th season dating back to 1980.
  • Winthrop is 847-359-5 all-time at home.
  • Winthrop is 476-351 all-time in conference play, the winningest record in conference history.
  • Winthrop is 28-16 all-time in season openers.
  • The Eagles also welcome back 19 players, nine of them starters and 19 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
  • Badillo was voted to the Big South Conference Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Badillo had an outstanding freshman campaign in 2023. He played in 29 games, starting in 26 of them. Badillo also led the team in batting average (.360), slugging percentage (.540) and on-base percentage (.453).
  • Badillo's accomplishments led to a spot on the Big South All-Freshman Team and was also named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Mar. 27. His biggest highlight of the year was against Gardner-Webb on May 26. In the longest game in Big South Tournament history, Winthrop defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs in the first elimination game of the second day of the tournament in High Point's Truist Point Stadium by a final score of 10-9 in 15 innings on his walk-off single.
  • Logusch played in 16 games in 2023. His highlight of the season was against Charlotte at home on Apr. 25. Logusch took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as Winthrop defeated the 49ers 5-2. He ultimately finished the contest with one hit and one earned run while striking out nine batters, two shy of a career-high, resulting in him picking up his first win in Garnet and Gold.
  • For his efforts, he was named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week on May 1. Logusch finished the season leading the team in innings pitched (58.1), strikeouts (76) and games started (14). He also had a season-high 11 strikeouts vs. LIU at home on Feb. 17.
  • Reese Lumpkin played in five games last season. In relief, he pitched a season-high 1.2 innings with one strikeout at The Citadel on Apr. 4. He had a season-low one walk vs. Cincinnati at home on Mar. 15 and had a season-low zero hits at Radford on May 6.
  • Whittle was named to the initial Watch List for the 19th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball.
  • Last season Whittle was named a 2023 Big South All-Academic Team Honoree. He led the team in wins (8), striking out 44 batters, posted a 6.70 ERA in 43 innings pitched in 27 games played in relief. He had a season-high five strikeouts against Cincinnati at home on Mar. 14.
