How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop trailed 6-4 before a huge 14-1 run gave Winthrop an 18-7 lead. The run also included 10 straight points scored by the Eagles.
Avery Jolley had five kills during the offensive onslaught. The hot start all but ended the competitive phase of the first frame. After UNC Asheville got a point to make it 18-8, Winthrop scored the final six points of the set.
Karli Shepherd had three of the six Eagle points during the closing rally.
Set 2 | Winthrop found themselves down 3-2 before another big run, this time a 7-1 tally, put them ahead 9-4. Jolley had three kills during the run. UNC Asheville fought back to tie the score at 11 but three Bulldog errors and kills by Shepherd,
Giselle Little,
Maeve Rehmann and two kills each by
Rachel McCollum and Jolley put the Eagles ahead 21-16. UNC Asheville then cut the margin to two at 22-20 but two more mistakes and a Little kill made it 2-0 Eagles in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop burst out of the gates to start the third, going up 8-1. The Bulldogs cut it to five at 9-4 but the Eagles answered with four straight points. The closest the Bulldogs would get the rest of the game was at 16-10. With Winthrop ahead by the same score, the Eagles restored their nine point lead at 22-13 behind five Jolley kills. The match officially ended five plays later.

Next week the Eagles face Gardner-Webb in back-to-back contests. Winthrop's originally scheduled match at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Sep. 28 at 2:00 p.m. was postponed due to the wet conditions caused by Hurricane Helene. It will now take place in Boiling Springs, N.C. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. Following that match, the Eagles welcome Gardner-Webb to Rock Hill the next day on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6:00 p.m. for Senior Night.
