Boiling Springs, N.C. – Winthrop volleyball won at Gardner-Webb in the first of back-to-back contests with the Runnin' Bulldogs Thursday night.

How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop trailed 4-0 before tying it at seven.
Avery Jolley led the way with three kills during the early tying rally. Winthrop was also down 10-8 before going ahead 20-14 after an error by Gardner-Webb. During the 12-4 rally that put the Eagles ahead,
Giselle Little notched three kills while
Karli Shepherd got two kills and an ace. The home team only got two more points after that while the Eagles finished the first set with five points after going up 20-14.
Set 2 | The Eagles jumped out to an 8-4 lead after a kill by
Rachel McCollum. Gardner-Webb scored three quick points to cut it to one but Winthrop answered right back with an 11-3 run to extend their lead to nine at 19-10 after Shepherd's kill. The Runnin' Bulldogs then tacked on the next five points to cut the deficit to four only to have a kill by
Isabella Murray, two kills by Jolley and a Gardner-Webb error take the lead up to 23-16. Gardner-Webb scored the next two points but McCollum's kill made it set point. The set ended two plays later on another kill by McCollum, doubling Winthrop's lead in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop led 4-1 early in the third after two kills and an ace by Shepherd. Gardner-Webb came back to take an 11-9 lead but the next 16 plays after that went back-and-forth, leaving the score tied at 18. With the score being the same, two kills by Shepherd and a kill by Little put the Eagles out in front 21-19 only for Gardner-Webb to knot things up again two plays later. Then two straight errors by the Runnin' Bulldogs broke the tie and put Winthrop within two points of winning the match. Gardner-Webb tied it at 24 but McCollum's kill made it match point. McCollum's kill ended the match on the next play.
