How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop jumped out to an 18-10 lead to start the night.
Giselle Little led the initial Winthrop offensive attack with four kills. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored five of the next eight points to cut it to 21-15 but two kills by
Avery Jolley and a kill by
Isabella Murray made it set point Eagles at 24-15. Gardner-Webb scored on the next play but Jolley ended the first set.
Set 2 | The Eagles led 7-4 early in the second frame with Little tacking on three kills. Gardner-Webb scored on the next play but three straight points by the Eagles made the score 10-5 in favor of the home team. Gardner-Webb scored three straight points of their own but a kill by
Rachel McCollum and an ace by
Maeve Rehmann put the Eagles up four. The visitors then proceeded to tie it at 12 but four straight points scored by the Eagles broke the tie. Shepherd and Little each had two kills to put Winthrop up by four. Winthrop stayed ahead by a margin ranging from two to four points for the next 14 plays. Up 23-20,
Jenna Calloway's kill made it set point and on the next play, an error by the Runnin' Bulldogs put the Eagles up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop burst out to a 10-4 lead to begin the third, forcing a timeout to be called by the visitors. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded by slicing the lead to 17-15 but six straight points scored by the Eagles put Winthrop up 23-15. After a point by Gardner-Webb, McCollum's kill made it match point at 24-16. Gardner-Webb scored one more point after that as the Eagles ended Senior Night on the next play on a Gardner-Webb error.

The Eagles will learn of their opponent for the upcoming Big South Tournament next weekend. Winthrop is the No. 2 seed and will play the winner of Friday's No. 3 vs. No. 6 seed matchup next Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Millis Center on the campus of High Point University in North Carolina. The tournament will be televised on ESPN+.
