How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop led 6-3 thanks to four errors by the Spartans. Upstate tied it at 7-7 but the Eagles broke the tie by scoring three straight points, capped off by a kill by
Giselle Little. Upstate then responded with two quick points but five consecutive errors by the Spartans put Winthrop up by six at 15-9. Upstate cut the deficit in half but the Eagles scored seven of the next nine points to go up 22-16. The home team fought back to 24-22 but
Avery Jolley's kill clinched the first set.
Set 2 | The Eagles trailed 4-0 before tying it on four straight errors by the Spartans. Upstate scored the next three points and led 9-6 before Winthrop stormed back by scoring eight of the next 11 points to take a 14-12 lead. The Spartans then went back up by one three plays later and for the next couple of plays the two teams traded points. With Winthrop down 19-18, two kills by Jolley and a kill by
Rachel McCollum vaulted the Eagles into a late two-point lead. This gave Winthrop the lead for good in the set. Upstate fought back to within one on three separate occasions, the last at 23-22. Kills by
Karli Shepherd and Jolley won the second set for Winthrop.
Set 3 | Winthrop found themselves down 9-3 before coming back to take a 10-9 lead via five errors by Upstate. The Spartans scored seven of the next nine points to go back up 16-12. Winthrop then tacked on the next two points only for Upstate to score two straight points themselves to restore their four-point lead. The Eagles cut it to one on the next three plays only for the Spartans to register two more points to their total to go up 20-17. Winthrop continued to battle back, trimming the lead to one but Upstate got on the board in the match by scoring five of the final seven points.
Set 4 | Winthrop led 7-3 early in the fourth stanza before Upstate came back to take a 9-8 lead. The Eagles went on a 14-5 run to take a commanding 22-14 lead. Upstate would fight back to cut the lead to 24-20 but McCollum's kill on the next play ended the match.

The Eagles host UNC Asheville tomorrow on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming weekend.
