How it Happened
First Quarter | Both teams could only muster a combined eight points in the first four minutes of play, with Winthrop's baskets being jumpers by
Ar'Mani Reid and
Marissa Gasaway. Air Force took their first lead of the day with 5:30 to go only for Winthrop to reclaim the lead on a
Ciara Harris three-point bomb immediately thereafter.
Blessing Okoh then made a free throw to go up 8-6 at the 4:02 mark while also holding the Falcons scoreless for three minutes after Harris's triple. Air Force knotted it up at eight on a jumper with 2:29 to go and the score would hold for the rest of the frame.
Second Quarter | Air Force scored the first four points of the second stanza in a two-minute span before Gasaway's jumper cut the deficit to 12-10 at the 6:39 mark. Trailing 14-10 with five minutes before the half, Harris drained her second triple to make it a one-point game a minute later. Then behind by four points on three other occasions after that, the last at 21-17 inside of a minute, Gasaway's layup and a free throw made it 21-20 in favor of the Falcons at the break.
Third Quarter | The Eagles scored the first six points of the second half to take a 26-21 lead at the 7:44 mark. The scores came via
Ronaltha Marc, Reid and
Leonor Paisana. The Falcons scored four quick points but two free throws by Gasaway put the Eagles up 28-25 with 5:43 left. Air Force then scored eight of the next 12 points to go ahead 33-32 with 2:28 to go but Winthrop surged out in front 35-33 28 seconds later on a layup by
Amourie Porter. The Falcons came back to lead 37-35 with 1:17 left only for Porter to tie it again on a layup with exactly a minute remaining. Down 39-37 after two Air Force free throws a few seconds later, Porter's layup tied it with six seconds left.
Fourth Quarter | Air Force broke the tie by scoring 14 of the first 18 points of the fourth quarter, taking a 53-43 lead with 4:41 remaining. Porter hit a layup on the next Eagle possession to cut it to eight but the Falcons answered with a three-pointer to extend their margin to 11 on the next play. Winthrop would not get any closer after that as Air Force would go on to win 62-47.
