How it Happened
First Quarter | UNCW scored the first five points of the night in a one-minute span before a score from downtown by
Leonor Paisana got the Eagles on the board at the 8:42 mark. The Seahawks scored on the next play to lead by four before Paisana drove down low and put it in to make it a two-point game two possessions later. A triple by the home team then made it 10-5 with six and a half minutes left. The next couple of minutes was a field goal scoring drought for both teams.
Amourie Porter would hit four three throws to make it a 10-9 game at the 3:17 mark while UNCW failed to score for more than six minutes.
Olivia Wagner's three-point bomb gave Winthrop its first lead of the game with 1:20 left in the frame but the Seahawks hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a one-point lead entering the second quarter.
Second Quarter | The Seahawks scored the first 11 points of the quarter, taking a 24-12 lead at the 4:28 mark as Winthrop failed to score for more than half of the stanza.
Nuria Cunill's layup ended the scoring drought for the Eagles at the 4:12 mark and on the next possession for the Garnet and Gold, Wagner drilled one from deep to cut the margin to seven. Two minutes later saw the Seahawks score on a jumper but Paisana scored on a layup to make the score 26-19 with 1:14 remaining, which would be the score at the break.
Third Quarter |
Ronaltha Marc scored four of the first six points for both teams in the first two minutes of the quarter, making the score 28-23 in favor of UNCW. The Seahawks answered with a 9-0 run, extending their lead to 14 with 5:53 left in the frame. UNCW also held Winthrop scoreless for four minutes. Paisana then scored on a layup to cut the lead to 37-25 but UNCW scored six of the next eight points to go up 16 at 43-27 with 1:22 left in the quarter. Porter wrapped up the quarter by scoring four quick points by herself to leave the Eagles trailing 43-31 after 30 minutes of action.
Fourth Quarter | The two teams split the first 20 points of the fourth quarter, leaving Winthrop still down by 14 at 54-40 with six minutes left in the game. Porter accounted for four of the Eagles early 10 points in the frame. UNCW eventually extended their margin to 21 at 65-44 with 52 seconds left in the game.
