How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop led 6-3 with half of the early Eagle points coming via Radford mistakes. The Highlanders responded with four straight points for a one-point lead but Winthrop struck back with six of the next eight points to go back ahead by three at 12-9. Radford then tied it up at 12 but three errors by the home team and kills by
Avery Jolley,
Rachel McCollum, Paige Bennett and
Isabella Murray broke the tie and once again put the Eagles up by three at 19-16. For the next seven plays, the Eagles continued to maintain a lead of either one or two points. With Winthrop up 22-20, an error by the Highlanders put the Eagles up three. Radford tacked on another point on the next play to again cut the lead to two but kills by McCollum and Bennett ended the set.
Set 2 | Winthrop scored the first four points of the second set on kills by McCollum and Jolley and two Radford errors. Following this, the Eagles extended their lead to 13-8 after two kills by
Sydney Nolan, a kill each by Bennett and
Maeve Rehmann, two kills by Jolley and three straight kills by McCollum. Radford then answered with four straight points to cut it to one but kills by McCollum and Jolley and an ace by Jolley gave the Eagles a four-point lead at 16-12. The Highlanders scored 10 of the next 15 points to take a 22-21 lead but the Eagles once again finished the set with a closing run. A kill by McCollum and an error by the Highlanders put Winthrop up by one. After Radford tied it on the next play, Bennett and McCollum doubled Winthrop's lead in the match.
Set 3 | The Eagles trailed 4-1 to start the third set but two kills by McCollum and an ace by Jolley tied it up. Radford led 9-5 before Winthrop scored eight straight points to vault into the lead at 14-9. Rehmann capped off the run with a kill. The Highlanders then cut it to one at 19-18 but kills by Murray and McCollum gave Winthrop a three-point lead. Radford scored on the next plays but Bennett's kill restored the three-point edge for the Eagles at 22-19. The Highlanders rallied to tie it at 23. Jolley's kill put Winthrop at match point and on the next play Jolley's kill ended the match.

The Eagles travel to UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. The match was scheduled to take place on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6:00 p.m. but was postponed due to the wet conditions caused by Hurricane Helene.
