How it Happened
First Quarter | Wake Forest led 6-0 until
Olivia Wagner's triple got Winthrop on the board at the 6:35 mark.
Amourie Porter made it a one-point game a minute later on a driving layup and
Mya Pierfax tied it up with a free throw with 4:29 remaining in the quarter. Porter then gave Winthrop the lead for the first time at the 3:23 mark on a jumper. The Eagles also held Wake Forest scoreless for nearly minutes. The home team answered by scoring four straight points for a two-point lead at 10-8 at the end of the quarter while also holding the Eagles scoreless for the final 3:23 of the frame.
Second Quarter | Pierfax knotted it up a minute into the quarter on a fast break layup off a steal and a personal mini 5-0 run by
Ciara Harris gave Winthrop a 15-10 lead with 6:08 left. Wake Forest drilled a three-pointer a few seconds later but the Eagles immediately took the margin back up to five on the next possession on Pierfax's and-one. The Demon Deacons then scored seven of the next 11 points to cut the lead to two with 1:56 remaining only to have them foul Porter while shooting a three. Porter drained all three free throws to put the Eagles ahead 25-20 with 1:24 left in the half. Wake Forest scored the final five points of the frame to result in a tie score after 30 minutes of play.
Third Quarter | Wake Forest scored first to start the second half only for
Blessing Okoh to tie it at 27 on a second-chance layup at the 9:16 mark. The Demon Deacons broke the tie by going on a 15-5 run to take a 42-32 lead with 2:52 to go in the quarter. A basket by
Ronaltha Marc and two free throws by Porter ended the Wake Forest run and made the deficit 42-36 with 1:22 remaining in the stanza. Wake Forest answered by scoring the final five points of the quarter to lead by 11 at 47-36.
Fourth Quarter | The home team picked up right where they left off to start the final quarter, scoring the first five points in a one-minute time span to up their lead to 52-36. Marc's jumper cut it to 14 with 8:42 remaining but Wake Forest took it up to 27 with an 14-1 run, putting the Demon Deacons up 66-39 with 3:44 left in the contest. The Eagles then scored the next 11 points to wrap up the scoring, all by Harris and Wagner.
