How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop found themselves down 8-4 early before turnaround jumpers by Marissa Gasaway and Blessing Okoh tied it up with 5:36 remaining in the frame while holding the Royal scoreless for four minutes. Amourie Porter's free throws put Winthrop on top for the first time in the ballgame nearly three minutes later. Queens then tied it on a jumper on the next play only to have Nuria Cunill's turnaround jumper put the Eagles back in the lead 12-10 at the 2:19 mark. Ahead by one at 12-11, Porter again drained two free throws to extend Winthrop's lead to three a minute later. The Royals answered with a jumper on the next play but Porter did the same with 30 seconds left. Queens hit a free throw to end the quarter, leaving Winthrop ahead 16-14.

Second Quarter | Okoh's fast break layup on Winthrop's first possession of the second quarter extended the lead to 18-14 only to have Queens knot the score a few minutes later. Okoh's three-pointer broke the tie at the 7:16 mark. The Royals got a layup a minute later but the Eagles then held Queens scoreless for four minutes while scoring the next eight points, four of them being free throws by Porter. After a Queens score, Porter drained one from deep to give Winthrop their largest lead of the half at 32-22 with 1:46 left. The home team wrapped up the half by scoring four quick points to cut the deficit to six at the break.

Third Quarter | Winthrop scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 39-26 lead at the 6:36 mark. Ronaltha Marc and Gasaway scored all of Winthrop's early seven points. Defensively, the Eagles also held Queens scoreless for four minutes. Queens then scored eight of the next 11 points to cut it to eight at 42-34. But a technical foul called on the Royals immediately ignited the Eagles on both sides of the floor, going on a 12-4 run to end the quarter with Gasaway leading the way with seven points. Winthrop led 54-38 at the end of the stanza.

Fourth Quarter | Queens scored the first five points of the fourth quarter but didn't score again for nearly six minutes. The Eagles responded by scoring the next seven points to go up 18 at 61-43 at the 4:21 mark. Queens then outscored Winthrop 9-8 to wrap up the contest.
