How it Happened
Set 1 | High Point led 6-3 before Winthrop rallied to lead 9-8 after kills by
Avery Jolley and
Isabella Murray and four Panther errors. The home standing Panthers scored five quick points only to have the Eagles rally by scoring eight of the next 11 points to tie it at 16 after another Panther mistake. High Point then scored seven straight points to break the deadlock before a kill by
Giselle Little and an ace by
Paige Bennett temporarily stopped the run. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the match three plays later.
Set 2 | The Panthers took a 7-5 lead early in the second set before two kills and an ace by Bennett, two kills by Jolley and an ace by
Alyah Cadavid put Winthrop ahead 11-9. The Panthers quickly tied it at 12 but two errors by High Point and an ace by Jolley gave the Eagles a three-point edge. The Eagles then kept it going, scoring eight of the next 16 points to seize a five-point lead at 23-18. Jolley led the way during the extended run with three kills. High Point cut it to two on the next three plays but Jolley's kill put the Eagles within one point of tying the match. After a point by the Panthers, an error clinched the second set for Winthrop.
Set 3 | Winthrop led 11-5 courtesy of eight early High Point errors, two Jolley kills and a Bennett kill. The Panthers went on a 10-4 run to tie it at 15 but two kills by
Rachel McCollum, a kill by
Sydney Nolan and an error by High Point put the Eagles out in front 19-16. High Point then re-took the lead in the match by scoring nine of the final 12 points
Set 4 | The Panthers burst out to a quick 9-2 lead. Winthrop scored the next two points only to have High Point score the next three points. The Eagles would then answer with eight of the next 12 points to trim the deficit to three at 15-12 but High Point tacked on three more points to double their margin up to six. The Panthers went on to wrap up the match several plays later as Winthrop only scored three points the rest of the way.
