Rock Hill, S.C. – After having their first two conference matches postponed due to the wet conditions caused by Hurricane Helene, Winthrop volleyball opened Big South play with a sweep of USC Upstate Saturday afternoon at home.

How it Happened
Set 1 | The Eagles trailed 3-0 before scoring 12 of the next 15 points to lead 12-6.
Maeve Rehmann accounted for two aces during the run. USC Upstate also had six errors as part of Winthrop seizing the early six-point edge. The Spartans responded by scoring six of the next 10 points to cut the margin to 16-12 only for a kill by
Rachel McCollum to take it up to five and force a timeout to be called by USC Upstate. Winthrop kept things going in their favor after the break, eventually taking a 24-14 lead on kills by McCollum,
Karli Shepherd, three kills by
Avery Jolley, and three Spartan errors. A Spartan error ended the first set on the next play.
Set 2 | Winthrop again found themselves down by a few points early on at 4-1 before tying it up at four on two errors by USC Upstate and a kill by
Isabella Murray. The Spartans scored eight of the next 14 points to take an 11-9 lead. Kills by
Giselle Little and Jolley and two kills and an ace by Murray then put Winthrop back in the lead 15-14. The two teams split the next eight points, leaving Winthrop still ahead 19-18 after an error against the Spartans. Kills by Little, Murray and Jolley extended the margin to three at 22-19 but USC Upstate rallied with three straight points themselves to tie it up. With the score tied at 23, Winthrop went up 2-0 in the match after kills by Rehmann and Shepherd.
Set 3 | Winthrop came out on fire to start the third set, taking a commanding 15-5 lead and all but ending the competitive phase of the match. During the fast start to the stanza, Rehmann led the Eagles with two kills. USC Upstate scored five of the next eight points to make it 18-10 but Winthrop's early offensive burst to start the frame proved to be too much for the visitors to overcome. The Eagles then restored their margin to double digits at 24-11 following four kills by
Paige Bennett, a kill by Shepherd and an error by USC Upstate. The match ended on the next play on an error by USC Upstate.
