Eagles Host PC In Key Game Saturday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – The regular season comes to a close Saturday night as Winthrop hosts Presbyterian College with a chance to finish second in the league standings on the line.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE
This marks the 28th meeting all-time between the Eagles and Blue Hose. It's a series that started in 1977, took a pause after 1985 when the Eagles transitioned to the NCAA Division I level and then started up again in 2007 when PC moved to D1. The Eagles won the last meeting 2-1 in Clinton in 2023 and has won two straight meetings in Rock Hill. In regular season conference meetings the Eagles hold a 10-4-2 record against PC.   
FOOT NOTES
  • This is a key contest for the Eagles who have a chance to finish 2nd in the conference standings
  • Winthrop is 2nd if it can get a win over PC and Gardner-Webb loses at High Point
  • Any other results will have Gardner-Webb as the second seed for the Big South Tournament
  • The 2nd place finish is important as the Top 2 seeds earn byes into the semifinals (Nov. 10)
  • Eagles can finish no worse than 3rd place and if that happens they will host a Big South quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
  • Sitting at 4-2-0 in league play and in third place, two points behind Gardner-Webb and four points ahead of UNC Asheville in fourth place
  • It's the first time since 2021 the Eagles have four league wins and the second time in the last nine seasons
  • In the win over Radford, Diomario Adamson, Ethan Marks and Ryan Armijo all scored their second goals of the season

  • Senior Andres Manzano Garcia made three strong saves to preserve his first shutout as an Eagle (vs. Asheville)
  • Prior to the 1-0 loss to Gardner-Webb the Eagles earned a 2-1 victory over Longwood for the first 2-0 start to conference play since 2015
  • Longwood tied the game with 1:56 to play and then the Eagles responded with a game-winning goal 28 seconds later
  • Suhong Jung scored the game-winning goal, his second of the season
  • Bruno Riveron Sagrero set up both goals in the game and now has three assists on the season to lead the team
  • In each of the first two conference games, Rodrigo has scored the first goal of the match and Suhong Jung has scored the second goal for the Eagles
  • In the USC Upstate match, sophomore Jack Kilstrom made three saves to earn his second career shutout
  • Picked up first win of the season on Sept. 6 in a 2-1 victory at home over Queens
  • Armijo scored the game-tying goal in the 66th minute and was set up by fellow freshman Caleb Swenson
  • In the 83rd minute, Dimario Adamson scored his first goal as an Eagle for the eventual game-winning goal
  • Eagles return 17 players from last year's roster, including nine starters
  • This roster is made up for one graduate senior, 15 seniors, three juniors, seven sophomores and two freshmen
  • The team's leading scorer from a season ago was Ricardo Ferreira, who returns as a senior after tying for the conference lead in goals (6)
  • Returning starters from a year ago also include Jack Kilstrom (GK), Borris Nguelle, Sam Pidgeon, Bruno Riveron Sagrero, Emory Crichlow, Josh Sczech, Diego Candia and Ricardo Ferreira
  • The Eagles qualified for the Big South Conference Tournament in 2023, but fell at UNC Asheville in the semifinals
  • This is the 50th season for the program and this game marks the 969th in the history of the program
  • Daniel Ridenhour is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Eagles after serving the previous 12 seasons as an associate/assistant coach
  • Winthrop has five Big South Conference Championships, which is the second most by any member in league history
  • The Eagles have made six NCAA appearances, also the second-most by any league program
  • Winthrop has an all-time record of 365-371-50 while in the Big South and the 365 victories are the second-most all-time

  • Andres Manzano Garcia (Big South Defensive Player of the Week – Oct. 14)
    • Made three saves to help the Eagles earn a 2-0 shutout victory over UNC Asheville
    • Also made three saves in the 1-0 loss to Gardner-Webb
  • Jack Kilstrom (Big South Defensive Player of the Week – Sept. 23)
    • Made three saves and dominated the box in the air in the 2-0 Big South opening win at USC Upstate
  • Ryan Armijo (Big South Freshman of the Week – Sept. 9/Oct. 27)
    • Scored the game-tying goal in the 66th minute in the win over Queens
    • Made his second straight start and logged in a season-high 77 minutes
    • His second honor of the season came as he provided an insurance goal in a 3-1 win at Radford
    • He started both games on the week, including a career-high 81 minutes at Campbell
  • Diego Candia (Preseason Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year/Preseason All-Conference Team)
    • Started all 14 games he played in 2023 and was 3rd on the team in minutes played
    • As a defender, finished with a goal and an assist
  • Ricardo Ferreira (Big South Preseason All-Conference Team)
    • Led the Eagles in scoring with six goals/12 points
    • 2023 All-Big South First Team
    • Tied for first in the Big South with six goals

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MEN'S SOCCER
The 2024 season marks the 50th Anniversary for men's soccer. The team began competition in 1975 under the guidance of Jim Casada. The first collegiate game took place at UNC Asheville in 1975, with the Eagles falling to the Bulldogs. That inaugural season the Eagles finished 3-7 and by the third year, produced their first winning season at 11-9-1.
Over the years the Eagles have enjoyed a great amount of success, setting the most victories in a single-season at 18 in 1984 and scoring the most goals (94) in 1978. In 11 seasons at the NAIA level, the Eagles were 122-99-10. In 1984 Winthrop began competing in the Big South Conference in men's soccer and transitioned into NCAA Division I in 1986.
Over their time in the Big South Conference the Eagles have claimed five Big South Conference Tournament titles and have appeared in the NCAA College Cup six times. The first championship came in 2002 as the Eagles knocked off 13th-ranked Coastal Carolina 2-1 in overtime. The Eagles went on to win conference championships in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2015. The Eagles have appeared in the NCAA College Cup in 2002, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2015. The team advanced to the Round of 32 in 2012 after getting past SMU in a penalty shootout.
In 50 years, the Eagles have 462 victories and have an overall mark of 462-445-62.
