How it Happened
Set 1 | High Point started the afternoon with a 9-3 lead. Kills by
Giselle Little and
Avery Jolley on the next two plays made it a four-point deficit only for the Panthers to restore their six-point edge shortly thereafter at 11-5. The Eagles then tacked on the next four points to cut it to two on two Panther errors and kills by
Maeve Rehmann and Jolley. High Point answered with a 7-2 rally to go ahead by seven at 18-11 but the Eagles continued to fight back, cutting to two at 24-22 with an 11-6 run of their own after an ace by
Jenna Calloway. High Point ended the frame with an error by the Eagles on the next play.
Set 2 | The Panthers jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the second set. The Eagles scored seven of the next 10 points to cut the deficit to five at 14-9. During the mini spurt, High Point had five errors while
Karli Shepherd notched two kills. The Eagles kept the rally alive, cutting it to three at 21-18 late in the set after High Point led 17-10.
Rachel McCollum led the way for the Eagles during the second rally with three kills. High Point then scored the next two points to lead by five but Winthrop gave it one last push in the stanza, cutting the score to 24-22. But a kill by High Point on the next play gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop led 7-5 early in the third set on four High Point mistakes and kills by
Isabella Murray, Shepherd and Jolley. High Point scored the next two points to tie it up but two McCollum kills and two Panther errors put Winthrop ahead by three at 11-8. The Panthers then stormed back with an 8-1 run to take a 16-12 lead. But it was Winthrop's turn for a big run, rallying to take a 20-19 lead with an 8-3 edge. Jolley lead the way offensively for the Eagles with four kills. High Point then ended the day by scoring six of the final eight points.
