How it Happened

Set 1 | With the set tied at three in the early going, five straight points by the Eagles broke the tie. Avery Jolley had two kills while Giselle Little, Karli Shepherd and Sophia Matthews each had a kill. The Eagles kept it going, blowing the set open with a 12-4 outburst to seize a 19-8 lead after an ace by Jenna Calloway. Radford would then score eight of the next 14 points to cut the margin to eight at 24-16 but the Eagles wrapped up the set on an error by the Highlanders on the next play.

Set 2 | Winthrop started the second set with a 7-5 lead via two Highlander errors, three kills by Shepherd and a kill each by Isabella Murray and Little. But the rest of the set belonged to Radford as they went on a 20-9 run to tie the match at one. Of Winthrop's nine points during Radford's big run, Rachel McCollum, Paige Bennett and Giselle Little each had two kills.

Set 3 | The Eagles trailed 5-1 before another huge run, this time an 18-7 spurt, put Winthrop up 19-12. Jolley led the way offensively during the rally with three kills while the Highlanders had 10 mistakes to contribute to the Winthrop run. Radford scored the next two points but the Eagles answered right back by scoring three straight points of their own to go up 22-14, all on three Jolley kills. Radford then tacked on five of the next seven points to make the score 24-19 but Shepherd ended the stanza on the next play.

Set 4 | The third set started knotted up at six, with three Shepherd kills accounting for half of the early Winthrop points. The Eagles proceeded to break the deadlock by scoring six of the next seven points to take a 12-7 lead after a kill by Maeve Rehmann. Rehmann had three kills as part of the tie-breaking rally. Winthrop kept the pressure on for the next couple of plays, clinging on to a lead ranging from three to five points. Ahead 16-12, the Eagles then took control of the frame and the match on four kills by Jolley, two kills by Shepherd and two errors by Radford, giving Winthrop a 24-15 lead. Radford scored the next three points but a Shepherd kill ended the match.
