How it Happened

First Quarter | Down 2-0, Jada Ryce tied it on a layup two plays after CSU scored on their opening possession, thus getting her over 500 career points. CSU scored four of the next six points and took an 8-4 a few minutes later while holding Winthrop scoreless for more than four minutes. Trailing 8-4 with five minutes left, Winthrop rallied to lead 11-10 at the end of the frame with a 7-2 run. The run included a three-pointer by Leonor Paisana, which tied her for 10th on the all-time Eagle three-pointers made list.

Second Quarter | The two teams traded baskets in the first three minutes of the second quarter, leaving the score 16-16. Winthrop would go up 22-20 at the 3:36 mark by scoring six of the next ten points only for the Buccaneers to go back out in front with an 8-0 run, taking a 28-22 lead into the break and holding Winthrop scoreless the rest of the quarter.

Third Quarter | Winthrop scored the first six points of the second half to tie it at 28 at the 6:57 mark. Paisana made five of the first six Eagle points. The Buccaneers scored the next four points to break the tie over a two-minute time span and eventually took a 38-32 lead more than three minutes later. The visitors then canned a triple just before the buzzer and led 41-34 at the end of three.

Fourth Quarter | Ryce started the fourth quarter with a jumper but a three-pointer by CSU pushed their lead to eight on their next possession. CSU would eventually seize a 12-point lead at 53-41 with 3:50 left while also holding Winthrop to a single free throw for four minutes after the Eagles cut the lead to six with nearly seven minutes left. But the Eagles were not done just yet. Winthrop went on an 11-2 run to cut it to three with nearly a minute to go. But that's as close as the Eagles would get as CSU hit a couple of free throws inside of 30 seconds to end Winthrop's comeback bid.
