How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop's first possession of the night was a three-pointer by Blessing Okoh 20 seconds into the game. The Eagles failed to score for more than four minutes until Marissa Gasaway's layup made the score 6-5 High Point at the 5:02 mark. Then trailing 17-12 at the 2:11 mark, a 7-0 run vaulted Winthrop into an 18-17 lead at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter | The second quarter was simply all High Point. The home standing Panthers went on a 23-5 run to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Eagles were held to only two field goals in the frame and were held scoreless for nearly six minutes.

Third Quarter | Down by 17 at the half, Winthrop came out on fire to start the second half, scoring the first 13 points. This made the score 40-36 in favor of the Panthers and forcing a timeout to be called by High Point. Winthrop would get the score to within three points on three separate occasions after the timeout, the last at 46-43 with 5:14 left. But High Point then re-asserted themselves with a 14-7 run, taking a 60-50 lead into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter | The teams split the first 12 points in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, leaving High Point still ahead by 10 at 68-58 at the 4:14 mark. Winthrop would score eight of the next 10 points to make it a four-point contest inside of a minute. But it was too little too late as High Point would hang on for the victory.
