Eagles Seek Third Straight Victory Against Bucs Wednesday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off their first victory over defending conference champion Gardner-Webb by a final score of 61-50 on Saturday afternoon, Winthrop women's basketball (9-10, 3-3 Big South) seeks their third straight win as they host Charleston Southern on Wednesday night.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
This is the 32nd meeting between the Eagles and the Buccaneers with Charleston Southern leading the series, 33-32. The Buccaneers won both meetings last year. The first meeting between the two teams was on Jan. 9, 1991, with Winthrop winning 79-54 at home on the way to winning the first three meetings. Charleston Southern won 21 of the next 27 meetings. Winthrop has since won 23 of the last 35 meetings, including a streak of eight straight wins from 2008-2011. Winthrop will be seeking their first win vs. Charleston Southern since a 56-43 result on Feb. 15, 2022 on the road. Charleston Southern went 5-25 (3-15 Big South) in 2022-23.

  • Winthrop beat defending conference champion Gardner-Webb for the first time in four seasons by a final score of 61-50 on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

  • Marissa Gasaway-Big South Player of the Week (Dec. 4)
  • Averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games.
  • Opened the week with a career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds in an overtime setback to UNC Wilmington, her second double-double of the season.
  • Nearly notched another double-double against Queens as she finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
  • She shot 50.0 percent from the floor (13-of-16) and 13-of-17 from the free throw line (76.5 percent) for the week.
