How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop started the night with an early 10-8 lead with four kills by
Avery Jolley leading the way for the Eagles. High Point scored the next three points to take a 11-10 lead only to watch the Eagles score three of the next four points via another Jolley kill, a kill by
Teagan Sychterz and a Panther error. The error committed by High Point put Winthrop in the lead 13-12. But the Panthers used a closing 13-2 run to seize a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 | The visitors began the second set up 7-3 before two service errors by the Panthers made it a two-point game. Down 11-6, the Eagles scored the next two points only for High Point to go up six at 14-8 on the next three plays. The Panthers eventually seized their largest lead of the set several plays later at 22-14. The Eagles did cut it to five on kills on two straight kills by
Brookelynn Thomas and a kill by
Reece Rhoads, making the score 22-17 but High Point clinched the second set by scoring three of the final four points, putting the Eagles down in the match 2-0.
Set 3 | The Eagles showed some serious fight to start the third set, leading by as much as four at 10-6. Jolley and
Riley Oglevie each had two kills to lead Winthrop during their initial start to the third frame. High Point responded by scoring five of the next nine points, yet still trailed 14-11. But from here, the Panthers took control of the match with a 13-5 run, taking a 24-19 lead as a result and putting them within one point of winning the match. Winthrop gave it one last push to try and force a fourth set by scoring the next three points but a kill by the Panthers on the next play ended the match.
