How it Happened
Set 1 |
Riley Oglevie got the Eagles on the board first with a kill but the Highlanders responded with a 7-1 run to take an early 7-2 lead. Winthrop cut it to 10-8 by scoring six of the next 10 points, which including an
Isabella Murray ace only to see Radford to go up six at at 15-9 with a mini 5-1 run. For the next several plays, Radford continued to maintain a lead ranging from four to six points, their last at 20-16. Back-to-back kills by
Avery Jolley and Oglevie then made the score 20-18 as the Eagles looked to come back. But it wasn't to be. With the visitors up 23-21 after kills by
Brookelynn Thomas and
Karli Shepherd, Radford got the next two points to win the first set.
Set 2 | Winthrop started the second set down 3-0 before answering with four straight points. Two of the four Eagle points were Shepherd kills. After Radford tied it on the next play, another run of four straight points by Winthrop put the home team in the lead, forcing the Highlanders to call a timeout. Thomas had three kills during the small rally. Winthrop never looked back after the break, finishing the second set with a huge 17-4 run, including eight straight points. Jolley had six kills during the clinching run.
Set 3 | The Eagles picked up right where they left off, going up 17-10 after an error against the Highlanders and forcing Radford to briefly stop play. Oglevie led the initial Winthrop offensive attack with four kills. During Winthrop's hot start to the third set, up 9-7, the Eagles scored five straight points to make it 14-7 with Oglevie scoring two of the five Eagle points. Winthrop would eventually seize a 24-15 lead after a Highlander error several plays later and went on to win the set on the next play, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4 | Winthrop burst to a 6-1 lead to begin the fourth set, led by Shepherd's two kills. This forced a Radford timeout. The visitors answered with an 8-3 run to tie it at nine. Oglevie's kill and Jolley's ace gave Winthrop the lead for good at 11-9. After this, Winthrop maintained a lead ranging from two to five points for several more plays, the last at 21-16 after Shepherd's kill. An ace by
Madison Gorniak made it 22-16 and after two more Radford points, the Eagles ended the match by scoring three of the last four points.
