Elon, N.C. – Winthrop cross country teams opened the 2023 season by competing at the Elon Twilight Open Friday evening.

Winthrop Highlights
- On the women's side (4k), Caroline Bend, Erin Melitski, and Lexi Taylor all made their debut in the Garnet and Gold.
- Morgan Ruff set a new PR with a time of 15:49.3, finishing 74th and shaving off a minute that she previously set at the Elon Opener in 2021.
- Olivia Kemp ran a 4k for the first time in her collegiate career, finishing 34th with a time of 14:48.3.
- On the men's side (6k), Daren Hinds finished 16th and set a new PR with a time of 18:07.2, shattering his previous time in this event by more than a minute. Hinds' previous time was 19:24.4 at the Elon Opener in 2021.
- Austin Spencer also set a new PR, beating his previous time set in the Elon Opener in 2021 by nearly 40 seconds. Tonight he finished 59th with a time of 19:18.5.
- Noah Woodberry competed for the first time as an Eagle, finishing 61st with a time of 19:23.1.
- Max Davis, Griffin McNeish and Logan Ragnow ran in the 6k for the first time in their collegiate careers, finishing 78th, 85th and 106th with times of 19:51.0, 20:05.1 and 20:59.2, respectively.
- Chadwick Sisson made his Eagles debut.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 15 when they compete in the Appalachian State Covered Bridge Invitational in Boone, N.C.
