How it Happened

Set 1 | Winthrop scored the first three points of the afternoon on two errors against the Phoenix and a kill by Riley Oglevie before Green Bay went on an 9-2 run to take an early 9-5 lead, prompting a timeout to be taken by the Eagles. Following the break, the Eagles scored seven of the next 13 points on two kills each by Karli Shepherd and Alicia Roberts, a kill by Oglevie and two Green Bay errors to cut the lead to 14-12. But three more points by the Phoenix forced Winthrop to stop play once again. After the timeout ended, Green Bay then took their largest lead of the set at 23-15 and would eventually go on to win the first set by a mark of 25-16, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set 2 | Winthrop started the second up 2-1 on a kill by Rachel McCollum and a Green Bay error before the Phoenix scored six of the next eight points to take a 7-4 lead. However the Eagles quickly reclaimed the lead at 8-7 on a kill each by Roberts and Oglevie and two more Green Bay mistakes. The Phoenix then scored three straight points themselves to go back out in front 10-8 and forcing Winthrop to call for time. The Eagles rallied to tie it up at 12 on kills by Oglevie, McCollum, Roberts and an error against the Phoenix following the timeout only for Green Bay to go out in front 16-12 with a small 4-0 run. Winthrop would get a point back on an error following the end of another timeout called by the Eagles but that's as close as Winthrop would get for the rest of the set as Green Bay would eventually take their largest lead of the set at 23-16. The Phoenix clinched the set five plays later and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3 | The first couple of points of the third set was largely a repeat of the second set for Winthrop as the Eagles took an early 3-1 lead on a kill by Oglevie and two Green Bay miscues only to watch the Phoenix grab an 8-4 lead a few plays later. This run forced play to be briefly stopped by the Eagles. Undaunted, Winthrop tied it at 12 on a Phoenix error, four kills by McCollum and a kill each by Avery Jolley, Sydney Nolan and Roberts. Green Bay then went on a 5-1 run to go up 17-13 and forced Winthrop to call a timeout. The Eagles continued to fight back, cutting it to one at 17-16 on a kill by Oglevie and Jolley and an error by the Phoenix. But Green Bay scored eight of the final 13 points to take the set and the match.
