Raleigh, N.C. – Winthrop volleyball fell to Rutgers on the first day of the Summit Hospitality Group Open by a final score of 3-0 (20-25, 10-25, 21-25) at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of North Carolina State University.

How it Happened
Set 1 | Winthrop started the match up 3-1 on a kill by
Avery Jolley and a block assist and a kill by
Rachel McCollum. Rutgers scored five of the next six points to take a 6-4 lead only to have Winthrop tack on the next four points to lead 8-6.
Brookelynn Thomas got two of those points on an ace and a block assist. But the Scarlet Knights went on a 14-6 run to lead by six at 20-14.
Karli Shepherd accounted for two kills for Winthrop during the run. Winthrop then began to battle back by scoring six of the next nine points with two Jolley kills leading the way during the rally. This made the score 23-20 in favor of the Scarlet Knights. But Rutgers closed out the set by scoring the final two points to lead the match 1-0.
Set 2 | Rutgers began the second set with a 4-0 lead before the Eagles came back to lead 8-7 on a kill by
Alicia Davis, three kills by Thomas, three errors by Rutgers and an ace by
Isabella Murray. The Scarlet Knights went back into the lead at 12-9 with a 5-1 run, forcing a timeout to be called by Winthrop. Rutgers then closed out the second set by scoring 13 of the final 14 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 | Winthrop trailed 2-0 to start the third set before tying it at four on two Rutgers errors and kills by Thomas and
Riley Oglevie. The Scarlet Knights used a 7-3 run to take an 11-7 lead and forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Jolley had two of Winthrop's points during the run, both on kills. After the break, Rutgers went up nine at 16-7 before the Eagles had a ferocious rally to cut it to two at 22-20 with a 13-6 run. Thomas had three kills during the rally. But that's as close as Winthrop would get as Rutgers ended the afternoon by scoring three of the last four points.
