th minute to help Winthrop earned a 1-1 draw with The Citadel, Sunday evening in the season opener for both teams.

Game Recap
- The Eagles created some chances offensively over the first 6-7 minutes
- In the 5th minute Monssi Avila-Gutierrez collected a loose ball as the Eagles forced a turnover and she turned to line up a shot from just outside the box which went right at the keeper
- In the 6th minute the Eagles forced another give away in the back as Ally Bender won the ball and the slipped a pass behind the defense into the box as Annabel Thomas ran on
- Thomas then struck a shot first time about eight yards out as Nora Sampson made a diving save to her right
- Thomas tracked down the rebound and fired a left footed shot on frame that was turned away by Sampson to keep the Eagles off the board
- In the 17th minute, Thomas tested Sampson again with a shot from outside the box toward the top left corner as Sampson leaped and tipped the ball over for a corner
- Six minutes later the Bulldogs had their best chance over the first 22 minutes as Samantha Grantham split the Eagles back line with a long ball that was tracked down by Ariana Paez and she calmly placed a shot into the lower left corner after entering the box
- The Eagles trailed 1-0 at the break, but did find the equalizer in the 89th minute
- The Eagles pushed forward looking to tie the match as Avila-Gutierrez slipped a ball through to Bryn Radvanski as she ran into the area and as she tried to strike the ball it was tackled away for a corner kick
- Sophia Balliet curled a service in front of goal and curved the ball over the head of Sampson in goal as it dropped in the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1
Notables
- The Eagles are now 2-0-1 in their last three season openers
- Both teams finished with 10 shots in the match as the Eagles had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal
- Sampson finished the game with six saves while Izzy Giarrizzi had three
- Balliet is the first Winthrop freshman to score in a season opener since JoJo Taylor did so in 2015 in a 1-1 draw with Western Carolina

Eagles remain at home for their next contest as they'll host Western Carolina on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+.
