Hopkins Selected In 2023 MLB Draft By Seattle Mariners

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop utility player Brody Hopkins was selected in the 2023 MLB Draft Tuesday. Hopkins, a junior pitcher and outfielder from Summerville, SC was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round with the 187th pick.

In his lone season in the Garnet and Gold after transferring from the College of Charleston, Hopkins earned First Team All-Conference honors from the Big South in 2023. The right-hander led the team in triples (3) and home runs (9) and started in 46 of 49 games he played in.

Overall, Hopkins marks the 36th Eagle in history to be selected in the MLB Draft.

This is the first time since 2019 that a Winthrop baseball player was drafted. That year saw pitchers Zach Peek and Nate Pawelczyk were selected by the Los Angeles Angels and the Chicago White Sox, respectively. Peek was drafted in the sixth round with the 181st pick while Pawelczyk went in the 10th round with pick number 290.
