ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University baseball team answered an early deficit with a five-run third inning but Western Carolina scored six unanswered over the final four frames in a 15-7 loss Thursday evening at Founders Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Western Carolina scored one in the second on a Mason Holton RBI sacrifice bunt before blowing it open with six in the third, highlighted by a Noah Quarless three-run homer and a Trey Spees solo shot
- Cox singled and Skowronski doubled to start the bottom of the third before Wouters crushed a three-run homer to deep center to cut it to 7-3
- Hernandez singled and scored on a fielding error, and Crowley ripped an RBI double to make it 7-5 as Winthrop clawed back
- Skowronski doubled home Cox in the fourth to pull within 8-6 and Crowley added an RBI groundout in the fifth to make it 9-7
- Western Carolina's bats kept coming as Wyatt Stanley and Cole Jones each homered and Holton added a three-run shot in the eighth to blow it open
- Winthrop was held scoreless over the final four innings as Mason Snyder threw three scoreless frames to close the door
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gilley took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in three innings
- Western Carolina hit five home runs on the night, with Quarless, Spees, Stanley, Jones and Holton all going deep
- Cox reached base in all four plate appearances with three singles
- Wouters' three-run homer gave him seven RBI over his last three games
- Winthrop has dropped two of its last three after a six-game winning streak
