Eagles Conclude Final Road Game With Loss To Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Winthrop lost to Gardner-Webb in the regular-season road finale by a final score of 15-10 on Wednesday afternoon, moving to 3-12 overall and 0-8 in Big South play. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ellie Dutton got the Eagles on the board first on a free position attempt a minute into the game.
  • GW answered with the next two goals.
  • Two goals by Molly Dankowski and Dutton's second gave Winthrop a 4-2 lead with 8:15 left in the first quarter before the home standing Runnin' Bulldogs made it 4-3 a few plays later.
  • Following a media timeout, GW then went on a 3-0 run to go up 6-4 with 20 seconds left and this would be the score after the first period.
  • GW started the second quarter with a score but Dankowski got a hat trick just after winning the draw control to cut the lead to two with 10:58 left.
  • Grace Taylor registered her first goal of the season and her collegiate career, making it a one-goal game with five minutes to go.
  • Erin Whitaker knotted it up at seven with 43 seconds to go until the break.
  • GW opened the second half with three goals before Claire Witmer and then Taylor scored to make it 10-9 with 8:25 left in the third quarter.
  • The home team made it 11-9 several plays later on a free position attempt and eventually added two more with 15 seconds left to lead 13-9 going into the fourth quarter.
  • Witmer scored her second goal of the game to make it 13-10 on the man-up with 8:10 remaining.
  • But the Runnin' Bulldogs ended the game by scoring the final two goals, the second coming with 35 seconds left.
