Eagles Pick Up First Conference Win Against Longwood To End Season

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop concluded the season in style by hanging on to beat Longwood on Senior Day by a final score of 13-12 on Saturday afternoon, finishing the year 4-12 overall and 1-8 in Big South play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Winthrop started the game up 4-2 on two goals by Molly Dankowski and a goal each by Lexi Johnson and Grace Taylor.
  • Taylor's came with 20 seconds left in the first quarter on the man-up, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead at the end of 15 minutes of play.
  • Dankowski's second goal of the game put Winthrop up 4-2 with 11:18 left in the second quarter.
  • Longwood tied the game at four in the span of three minutes.
  • Scarlet Cifarelli put Winthrop back in the lead at 5-4 a minute after Longwood's tying score.
  • The visitors tied it again several plays later but Gabby Pierpont scored with 15 seconds left in the half to enter the locker room out in front 6-5.
  • Grayson McKenzie and Taylor's second goal of the game on the man-up gave Winthrop a two-goal lead, 8-6 with nearly nine minutes left in the third frame.
  • The Lancers then went on a 3-0 run to seize a 9-8 lead but with one second left in the third quarter, McKenzie scored her second goal of the afternoon to tie the contest at nine.
  • McKenzie's goal at the end of the third started a 5-3 run for Winthrop to close out the game.
  • Johnson's second goal of the day put Winthrop ahead 10-9 early in the fourth quarter only to have Longwood tie it up a minute later.
  • Ellie Dutton's put Winthrop ahead to stay with 10 minutes left.
  • Johnson then registered a hat trick and Cifarelli scored her second to extend the Eagle lead to three, their largest of the day.
  • The Lancers would cut it to one with a minute left but Winthrop won the draw control and was able to run out the clock to send the Eagle seniors out on top.

  • Seven different Eagles scored a goal.
  • The teams were even in shots on goal, 20-20.
  • Winthrop had eight saves to Longwood's seven.
  • Winthrop nabbed 14 ground balls to Longwood's 12.
  • This was Winthrop's first and only Big South win this season.
  • The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak.
  • Winthrop finishes the year 3-4 at home.
