Eagles Beat UNCA In 10 Innings To Cap Off Huge Rally

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In one of the more entertaining games at The Winthrop Ballpark in recent memory, the Eagles rallied from an 8-0, fifth inning deficit to defeat UNC Asheville at home on a walk-off error in the second of a three-game series with the Bulldogs by a final score of 9-8 in 10 innings. The Eagles move to 19-21 overall and 8-9 in Big South play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bulldogs scored the first two runs in the top of the second inning on an RBI double and an RBI groundout.
  • The opposition made it 8-0 after their half of the fifth by going on a 6-0 run over the next three innings.
  • Winthrop got on the board on Jonathan Strauss's two-run double.
  • Then on the next two plays Nicholas Badillo and Ramses Cordova hit two shots to left field, with Badillo's being a two-run homer, suddenly cutting the deficit to three.
  • The Eagles continued to fight in the bottom of the eighth on Ricky Teel's sac fly and McKinley Erves's RBI single, bringing home Harrison Wilson and Brody Hopkins, making it 8-7.
  • On Winthrop's final chance Will Martin singled but got tagged out at second.
  • It did allow Charlie Evans to reach third but on the next play Evans got home on a wild pitch, tying the game at eight.
  • The game went to extra innings where after UNC Asheville failed to capitalize on their first chance.
  • In Winthrop's half of the tenth Hopkins tripled and then the Eagles capped off the improbable rally when Hopkins scored on an error with Teel at bat.

Winthrop plays the Bulldogs in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
