ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop defeated UNC Asheville at home in the first of a three-game series with the Bulldogs by a final score of 5-3. The Eagles move to 18-21 overall and 7-9 in Big South play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Eagles came out swinging, taking a quick 2-0 lead on McKinley Erves's two-run bomb.
• Winthrop upped the margin to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Ty Hooks doubled to bring home Jonathan Strauss and Nate Chronis hit a sac fly to score Hooks.
• The Bulldogs got on the board on a sac fly in the top of the fifth.
• Winthrop got one back in their half of the inning on a Ricky Teel sac fly, allowing Brody Hopkins to come across home plate.
• UNC Asheville hit a solo home run in the eighth and then hit an RBI double in the ninth to pull within two but a lineout ended the game.
