RADFORD, Va. – Winthrop lost to Radford on the road by a final score of 17-7 on Saturday afternoon, moving to 3-10 overall and 0-6 in Big South play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ellie Dutton gave Winthrop a 1-0 lead to start the afternoon nearly three minutes in.
- The Highlanders scored the next four goals to go up 4-1 with six minutes left in the first period.
- Molly Dankowski ended the run on a free position shot with 4:36 remaining in the frame.
- Radford scored on the next play to take a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Dankowski scored again on the man-up at the 14:13 mark of the second quarter before Radford tacked on three straight goals to lead 8-3 more than halfway through the period.
- Dutton scored her second of the game on a free position shot with 5:08 left to cut the lead to 8-4.
- But the Highlanders responded with four unanswered goals to go up 12-4 with nearly two minutes left.
- Dankowski got a hat trick with 1:15 left to leave the Eagles down 12-5 at the break.
- Both teams failed to score for nearly half of the third quarter until Radford put it in the back of the net with seven minutes left.
- The homestanding Highlanders added another two minutes later to seize a 14-5 lead.
- Dankowski scored her fourth with 3:59 left in the quarter to make it 14-6.
- Dutton notched a hat trick of her own with time almost gone in the frame, leaving Winthrop trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter.
- Radford put the game out of reach with three goals while also holding the Eagles scoreless in the final quarter.
