Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop softball battled but dropped a midweek Big South Conference contest 3-0 at USC Upstate, Wednesday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Paige Rivas led off the game drawing a walk and was sacrificed to second by KaDedra Temple
- Macy McCall followed with a walk but both runners were stranded
- Spartans grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second as Peyton Darnell drew a one out walk to get things started
- Carson Shaw was hit by a pitch two batters later with two outs and then Sarah Price laid down a bunt that was fielded by Reese Basinger but the throw to first was off the mark as pinch-runner Taliyah Thomas came around to score
- In the bottom of the third, Gasey Goguts hit a two-run home run to left with one out
- Winthrop put runners on base in the fourth as Ella McGalliard walked with two outs followed by a single from Chelsea Roberson to left center but Lilly Stump popped up to short to end the threat
- Peyton Rivas reached on an error to start the fifth and was sacrificed over to second by Olivia Martin
- Back-to-back ground outs from Paige Rivas and Temple ended the top half of the fifth
- In the top of the sixth Mackenzie Smith singled to right with one out and was replaced by Ashton Vanhouse at first as a pinch-runner
- Ashley Wood, who had entered the game earlier as a pinch-runner, stayed in as the designated player
- Vanhouse stole second on a 2-2 pitch to Wood who eventually walked to put two runners on base
- But the Eagles were unable to take advantage as Roberson and pinch-hitter Kaylyn Little struck out
- Peyton Rivas singled on a 1-2 count to start the seventh and two batters later moved to second as Paige Rivas singled
- Both runners moved over a base on a ground out by Temple
- McCall stood in and hit a grounder to short as she raced for first and was called out on a close play at first to end the game
EXTRA BASES
- Despite the loss the Eagles take the series against the Spartans 2-1
- The Eagles left nine runners on base and finished the series leaving a total of 25 in three games
- Eagles were shutout for the first time in 15 games dating back to Mar. 15 in a 1-0 loss to Quinnipiac
- It was just the 5th time the Eagles have been shutout this season

Winthrop will host Presbyterian College in a weekend series Apr. 14-15.
