ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop moved to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in Big South play with a 15-13 loss to Wofford at home on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wofford took a 3-1 lead early with the lone Winthrop goal coming by Erin Whitaker at the 6:12 mark of the first quarter.
- Grayson McKenzie and Ellie Dutton tied the game at three inside of a minute.
- The Terriers then went up 6-4 with 3:33 left in the second quarter as Molly Dankowski got the only Eagle tally during Wofford's run, this coming with 12:56 left in the frame.
- The Eagles would finish the second quarter and then start the third with a run of four straight goals.
- Dutton made it 6-5 with 1:51 left until halftime, which would be the score at the break.
- Then Lexi Johnson found the back of the net on the man-up while Claire Witmer and Dutton capped off the run to take an 8-6 lead with 10:57 left remaining in the third quarter.
- This would be Winthrop's only lead of the day.
- The back half of the third quarter belonged to Wofford as they scored seven of the next eight goals to take a 13-9 lead heading into the final stanza.
- Winthrop began to fight back by scoring three of the next four goals, two of them by Dutton, to cut the lead to 14-12 with nearly eight minutes left.
- But the Terriers put the game away with 1:13 left.
- Whitaker wrapped up the scoring with 22 seconds remaining.
