SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite two deep shots from
Brody Hopkins, Winthrop lost to USC Upstate on the road in the second game of the three-game series with the Spartans by a final score of 6-5, dropping the series. The Eagles move to 12-16 overall and 2-6 in the Big South.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop quickly went up 2-0 in the top of the first when Hopkins hit a home run on the very first pitch of the game and then with the bases loaded with two outs, the Spartans walked in Joseph Szvetitz.
- Upstate cut it to one in their half of the first on an error and then tied it in the next inning on an RBI single.
- The Spartans took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.
- Then in the bottom of the sixth Upstate hit an inside the park home run to extend their lead to 6-2.
- Hopkins hit his second home run of the game in the top of the eighth, this one a three-run homer, to give Winthrop life.
- But the Eagles couldn't tie or take the lead in their last chance at bat.
