Two-Run Single By Joseph Szvetitz In Ninth Inning Lifts Winthrop To Win At Upstate In Series Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Joseph Szvetitz hit a tie-breaking two-run single in the top of the ninth inning and Winthrop salvaged a win in the three-game series with USC Upstate on the road by a final score of 5-3. The Eagles move to 13-16 overall and 3-6 in the Big South.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brody Hopkins doubled to drive in Luke Hannum to start the game.
  • The Spartans tied it in their half of the first with a homer.
  • Winthrop went back up 2-1 in the top of the third when Jonathan Strauss doubled to score Szvetitz.
  • Upstate took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on two wild pitches.
  • Winthrop knotted the contest at three in the top of the eighth when McKinley Erves came home on Hopkins's fielder's choice.
  • Szvetitz brought home Erves and Charlie Evans in the top of the ninth to put the Eagles ahead to stay.
  • This is the first time this season that Winthrop won the game in the ninth inning.

Winthrop travels to The Citadel for the second and final matchup with the Bulldogs on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
