ROCK HILL, S.C. - Coming off an 8-0 loss to Wofford at home on Tuesday night in which the Eagles were shutout for the second time this season to drop their record to 7-6, Winthrop faces the East Tennessee State Buccaneers for a three-game series in Johnson City on Friday at 3 p.m.

The two schools will meet for the 18th time with the Eagles leading the series by a 10-7 count, but with a 2-4 record in Johnson City. After winning the first eight contests beginning with a 4-2 win in Rock Hill on Feb. 12, 1995, the Eagles have since dropped seven of the last nine encounters with the Bucs, including the last two games. The two teams met last season in Rock Hill with ETSU taking two of three encounters.

The Bucs most recent game was also on Tuesday night, a 4-1 loss at Clemson and have series wins over Toledo and Georgia Southern so far and are currently 6-6 on the year. Last season, the Bucs finished with an overall record of 30-21 and 11-10 in the Southern Conference. ETSU was picked fifth in their preseason poll this year.

Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
